The Opportunity

The project builds upon previous work from Professor Mostaghimi, focused on porous media, coal characterisation, multiscale simulation, applied machine learning, image processing and multiphase flow.

The Postdoctoral Researcher (Level A) will be part of a well-established research group with several PhD students and postdocs and will help achieve research outcomes of project in collaboration with a leading energy company through the planning, execution, and analysis of experiments as well as contributing to research proposals, papers and the supervision on research students as needed. The project aims at understanding multiphase flow in unconventional natural gas reservoirs using flow experiments, imaging and simulations. Good understanding of micro-CT imaging, core flooding and porous media as well as experience in numerical methods is required for this role.

  • Salary: Research Associate – Up to Level A6: $100,3189 per annum + 17% super
  • Full time, fixed-term contract: 12-15 months
  • Location: Kensington - Sydney, Australia

Skills & Experience

  • PhD (or soon to be awarded) in Chemical, Mechanical, Civil, Petroleum or Mining Engineering or related area.
  • Familiar with porous media, micro-CT imaging, image processing and physics of flow in subsurface
  • Experience in numerical methods preferably Python and machine learning algorithms
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrated track record of publications and conference presentations relative to opportunity.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Ability and capacity to implement required UNSW health and safety policies and procedures.
